Easy Jack-O'-Lantern Rice Krispies Pops
These are fun and easy to make. You don't have to put them on sticks if you prefer.
Found this one many years ago in a Woman's day magazine.
2 tbsp butter or margarine
1/8 tsp salt (I used salted butter, so I omitted the salt)
1 package (10.5 oz) or about 300g or 5 1/2 cup miniature marshmallows (or full sized ones as long as it is the same weight)
6 cups toasted rice cereal (rice krispies cereal or Speciak K cereal)
orange food colour
Tootsie rolls (chocolate and green)
You can use airhead candies or starburst candies as well.
Black frosting or decorating get to draw faces.
In a large saucepan over medium heat melt the butter and add in the marshmallows. Cook and stir constantly until marshmallows are completely melted. Turn off the heat.
Add the food colour and stir until well blended. Add the cereal and stir until coated.
Spray your hands with cooking spray or grease them with a bit of butter and take a portion of the mixture and form it into a ball shape. Insert a cookie stick or a popsicle stick and press the mixture firmly to pack it around the stick.
Unwrap the tootsie rolls and microwave for a few seconds to soften them if they are very hard. Form the tootsie roll pieces into stem shapes and stick them onto the cereal balls. If you find the tootsie rolls won't stick well, push the stick right through the cereal ball until it sticks out slightly through the top of the cereal ball and press the tootsie roll stems onto the stick to hold it.
Flatten the green candies and cut into strips using scissors. Curl them around a pencil to make tendrils and then stick them to the tops of the cereal pops. Let the cereal pops harden and enjoy!
I put the cereal pops in drinking glasses to keep the round shape and to keep the candy pieces from falling off until they hardened.
Draw on jack- O'-lantern faces using black frosting or decorating gel.
This recipe makes 4 large treats but you can certainly make them smaller and get 6, that's up to you. The smaller the treat the smaller the stick can be, so you could use the regular sucker stick if the treats are smaller.
